I read a variety books. Some for enjoyment, others concerning the craft of writing. I often pay attention to what drives the storyline. Is it plot, or a strong character that evokes emotion?
There are many different opinions on which one is more important. Personally, I like a balance. I need to connect to a character, where they came from, what drives them and how they grow. Without that, I have a difficult time immersing myself in a new world.
On the flip side, if a plot isn’t moving forward, I’m putting a book down within the first few chapters.
What are your thoughts from your own reading and writing? Do you feel a strong story needs both? Or do you feel one or the other takes precedence?
Until Next Time…
