I was talking with my son the other day and the conversation went like this:
Son: “Mom, you lost your mom and daughter in the same year and have continued to move forward. That takes a lot of strength, you’re my hero.”
Me: “Thank you honey, that means a lot to me. I don’t feel like a hero I just keep trying to move past my broken heart.”
Son: “I know and I love you.”
Me: “I love you too.”
Tears ran down my face. Never in my wildest dreams did I think we would have a conversation like that. It gives me hope for my daughter. We didn’t lose her to death, but in other ways, to other things.
So, this is a salute to all the single parents who have given every ounce of their being trying to be both parents, and this is to every parent who has dealt with their child and drug addiction, mental illness or just being hard-headed. Parenting brings you the deepest love and deepest pain, but I’d do it again.
